Recent decades have seen an uptick in the percentage of females pursuing medical careers.
In fact, for several medical specialties, including dermatology, the gender gap is no longer as wide as it used to be.
According to data gathered by the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges, women make up a larger percentage of residents in:
- Obstetrics and gynecology—83.4%.
- Allergy and immunology—73.5%.
- Pediatrics—72.1%.
- Medical genetics and genomics—66.7%.
- Hospice and palliative medicine—66.3%.
- Dermatology—60.8%
With the narrowing gender gap in dermatology (and other specialties), we have seen the growth of several prominent female figures.
Dermatology is an attractive specialty due to its many aspects. A great number of diseases and conditions fall under the umbrella of dermatology and these range from medical to cosmetic.
